Nuwa is one of the oldest figures in Chinese mythology, a creator goddess with the head and torso of a woman and the tail of a serpent. In the most famous story attached to her, she grows lonely wandering a newly formed world and begins shaping small figures from yellow clay along a riverbank; when she breathes life into them, they become the first humans.
The myth gives a folk explanation for social class: the figures Nuwa shaped carefully by hand became the nobility, while — tiring of the work — she dipped a rope in mud and flicked it, and the specks that flew off became the common people, made faster and less carefully.
Nuwa's second great myth is a repair job on a cosmic scale. After the gods Gonggong and Zhuanxu wage a catastrophic war that shatters one of the pillars holding up the sky, the world floods and burns beneath the resulting hole. Nuwa gathers stones of five colors, melts them down, and uses the molten mixture to patch the broken heavens, then props the sky back up on the severed legs of a giant tortoise.
She is closely paired with her brother Fuxi, with whom later tradition credits the invention of marriage itself — the two are often depicted together with intertwined serpent tails, Fuxi holding a carpenter's square and Nuwa a compass, symbols of the ordered world they helped shape.
