Did You Know?
- Phi Beta Kappa, founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776, was the first North American fraternity to include most of the elements of modern fraternities.
- Not every house uses Greek letters: Acacia and Triangle are long-standing exceptions to the usual two-or-three-letter pattern.
- In many Greek-letter organizations, the chosen letters stand for Greek words or the group's motto.
The Fraternity & Sorority Name Generator invents new Greek-letter names for fraternities, sororities and fictional campus houses, with an optional motto or house nickname, for writers, game masters and friend groups who need a believable chapter name. Unlike the campus-app handles on Fizz username ideas, it follows the real two-or-three-letter pattern and deliberately avoids the combinations national organizations already own.
Below are real names with the year each was founded or chartered, so you can see the pattern before you generate your own.

How These Names Are Built
Wikipedia's article on Greek-letter organizations says nearly all fraternity and sorority names are a sequence of two or three Greek letters. In many cases the letters stand for Greek words or the group's motto. A few exceptions, such as Triangle and Acacia, use no letters at all.
That makes a believable fictional name easy to get wrong in two ways. Random letters (Zeta Zeta Mu) read as a joke, while a famous combination reads as a real chapter. Three letters drawn from the Greek alphabet give thousands of orderings, and the two lists above hold only a few hundred real entries, so a fresh combination is easy to find. The reverse is the problem: a reshuffled famous name still sounds like the original.
- Stay at two or three letters: it is the convention readers recognise.
- Pair a motto with the letters: many real houses choose letters that stand for Greek words or a motto.
- Add a nickname for colour: a short informal name makes a fictional house feel lived in.
- Famous national names: Alpha Phi or Delta Gamma point at real organizations.
- Reshuffled famous names: a flipped Alpha Phi or Delta Gamma is still too close.
- Latin-letter abbreviations: write Kappa Sigma Tau, not KST.
What the Generator Does Differently
The generator's instructions use only the 24 genuine Greek letters, and forbid outputting the exact combination of well-known national organizations. A reordering of a famous name also counts as too close.
With no form selected, each batch of five aims for two three-letter names, two two-letter names and one single-word name in the style of Acacia. You can switch to a sorority, fraternity or co-ed society, and ask for either a motto or a house nickname. Each result carries a one-sentence note on the house's character.
Real organizations are trademarked, so use the generated names for fiction, games and jokes rather than for founding a chapter. Writing a wider cast? The secret society name generator covers hidden orders and clubs that go beyond Greek life.
Common Questions
What are some fraternity names?
Real examples include Delta Kappa Epsilon (1844), Chi Psi (1841), Beta Theta Pi (1839) and Alpha Tau Omega (1865), all listed above with their founding years. A few use words instead, such as Acacia and Triangle.
What are some sorority names?
Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Chi Omega and Delta Delta Delta are among the older ones, chartered between 1851 and 1895. Ceres and Clovia show that sororities sometimes use a word too.
How do Greek letter names for sororities work?
Almost all are two or three Greek letters. In many cases the letters stand for Greek words or the organization's motto, which is usually learned after initiation. The generator follows the same pattern.
Can I make up a fake fraternity name?
Yes. Pick two or three Greek letters, check the combination is not on the tables above or on a national organization's list, and keep it to fiction or jokes. The generator does the first two steps for you.
Is there a frat name generator that gives a motto?
This one does: choose "Add a Motto" under Extras and each name comes with a short motto, or choose "Add a House Nickname" for the informal name members would use.
