4-Letter Discord Usernames: How Many Exist and Which Shapes Are Still Open

There are about 2 million possible 4-character Discord usernames. Here's the maths, which patterns are most likely still free, and the scams to avoid.

A four-character Discord username sounds rare because it is. Discord usernames can use only 38 characters: lowercase a to z, the digits 0 to 9, a period and an underscore. Four slots from 38 options is a small space. Small enough to count.

So let's count it, then work out where the free ones are most likely hiding.

How Many 4-Letter Usernames Can Exist

2,085,136 possible strings of 4 characters from Discord's 38
456,976 if you use letters only
11,025 pronounceable consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel ones

These are our own counts, from the character set Discord announced when it moved to unique usernames in 2023. The first figure is simply 38 to the power of 4.

It's a ceiling, not a target. Discord's developer docs say it applies extra restrictions it doesn't list, so some of these are blocked outright.

Two million sounds like a lot. Discord has far more accounts than that, and every one of them needed a unique username after the switch. The short ones went first.

Which Shapes Are Still Worth Trying

Not all four-character names are equally hunted. Real words disappear first, then names that sound like words, then everything else. This table runs from most contested to least. The "chance" column is our judgement from how people pick handles, not data from Discord.

The examples show each shape. We can't tell you whether any one of them is free today: nobody outside Discord can.

The trade-off is obvious once it's laid out. The more a name looks like a word, the less likely it's free. Pronounceable four-letter names are only about 1 in 190 of the space. Mixed letter-and-digit names make up most of it.

Make the Digit Do Something

A random digit reads as "my first choice was taken". A chosen one reads as style. The difference is whether it carries meaning.

Do
  • Use digits that look like letters: 0 for o, 3 for e
  • Pick a number that means something to you
  • Put the separator where you'd pause aloud
  • Try ten variants of one shape before moving on
Don't
  • End with 69, 420 or 1337 unless that's the joke
  • Lead with an underscore: it looks like a typo
  • Use l, 1 and i together; nobody can read it
  • Chase a real word for an hour

Readability matters more than it seems. People type your username to add you as a friend. "l1il" is short but useless if your friends can't copy it.

How to Check Availability

Discord doesn't offer a public availability checker. The only reliable check is the change-username box in your own account settings, which tells you when a name is unavailable.

  1. Make a shortlist first: 20 to 30 options across two or three shapes.
  2. Test in settings: enter each one in the change-username field and note which are free.
  3. Don't confirm on the first hit: finish the list, then pick the best one.
  4. Keep your old name in mind: once you drop it, assume someone else can take it.
Third-party "Discord username checker" sites can't see Discord's database. Any site that asks for your login or account token to "check" names is trying to take your account. Never paste a token anywhere.

Buying One Is Against the Rules

People do sell short handles. Discord bans it. Its Terms of Service say you may not sell, lend or transfer your username without written approval. The Community Guidelines separately ban buying or selling usernames and accounts.

The Terms also let Discord reclaim or change any username. Pay for a four-letter name and you can lose it, the account, and your money. There's no process for getting a username back from a seller who disappears.

When a Short Display Name Is Enough

Your username isn't what most people see. In chat, Discord shows your display name, and that can be 1 to 32 characters with spaces, emoji and capitals. It doesn't have to be unique.

If you mostly want a short, clean look in your servers, set a four-letter display name and pick a longer username you can actually get. Only people adding you as a friend will see the username.

For ideas in every length, the Discord username generator has a Short setting. If you're also hunting a short name on Roblox, the rules there are different and the Roblox username generator follows them.

The rarest Discord username isn't four letters long. It's the one your friends can spell from memory.

Common Questions

Are there any 4-letter Discord usernames left?

Some, but almost no real words. Your best odds are names that mix letters and digits or use a period or underscore. Test each one in your account settings.

How many 4-letter Discord usernames are possible?

2,085,136 strings of four characters can be built from Discord's 38 allowed characters. Fewer are actually allowed, because Discord blocks some names it doesn't publish.

Can I buy a 4-letter Discord username?

Not legitimately. Discord's Terms of Service and Community Guidelines both prohibit buying or selling usernames, and Discord can reclaim any username.
