Organizing a Secret Santa usually means pulling names out of a hat and hoping nobody draws their own partner. This generator does the draw for you: list everyone taking part, add anyone who shouldn't draw each other, and it finds a valid match for the whole group in one click. Matches start hidden, so the person running the draw can take part without seeing who has who.
How to Run Your Draw
- Add everyone. One name per line. Duplicate names are merged, so use a last initial if two people share a first name (Sam K, Sam P).
- Add exclusions. Put people who shouldn't draw each other on one line, like "Sam, Alex". Couples, housemates and last year's pairs are the usual ones.
- Set the budget and date. Both are added to the message each person gets.
- Draw names. Then copy each person's message and send it to them privately, without revealing it.
Best when the organizer is also playing
- Matches stay hidden by default
- Copy each message without opening it
- Send by text, email or chat
Best when someone runs the draw but doesn't play
- See the full list at once
- Check exclusions were respected
- Copy every message in one go
Rules the Draw Follows
Nobody draws themselves, and nobody draws a person they're excluded from. With "No pairs drawing each other" switched on, two people never draw each other either, so you won't get Sam buying for Alex while Alex buys for Sam. Every draw is random, so "Draw again" makes a fresh random draw (with only three or four people there are few possible draws, so matches can repeat).
- Agree on a budget before the draw and put it in the message
- Keep a copy of all matches somewhere private in case someone loses theirs
- Ask everyone for a short wish list or a few likes and dislikes
- Exclude so many pairs that only one draw is possible, which makes the matches easy to guess
- Reveal matches on a shared screen if the organizer is taking part
- Change the list after sending messages, since a new draw changes every match
Common Questions
How do I do a Secret Santa draw online for free?
Type everyone's name into the list, add any exclusions, then press Draw names. Copy each person's message and send it to them. There is no sign-up and no email collection.
Can the organizer take part without knowing who has who?
Yes. Matches are hidden until you press Reveal, and the copy button copies a person's message without showing it on screen. Paste each message straight into a private chat with that person.
How do I stop couples drawing each other?
Put both names on one line in the "Can't draw each other" box, separated by a comma or an ampersand. You can put more than two names on a line, for example a whole household.
What if the draw says no valid match is possible?
Too many exclusions can leave someone with nobody to draw, especially in small groups. The tool checks every possible match before it says so, and names the person who is stuck when it can. Remove an exclusion or switch off "No pairs drawing each other", then draw again.
Are the names saved anywhere?
No. The draw runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server, so copy the results before you close the page. The optional AI gift ideas only send the budget and the interests you type into that box, never the names or the matches.
What should I buy for Secret Santa?
Something small and useful that fits the budget: good coffee or tea, a desk plant, a nice notebook, cosy socks, or a treat linked to a hobby. If you know one thing they like, type it into "Stuck on a gift?" under the draw and AI suggests six ideas within your budget (sign-in required).
