Did You Know?
- The Danube, Don, Dniester, Dnieper and Donets all contain the Scythian word for river, which is why so many Eastern European rivers sound alike.
- In Greek myth the Styx is the river of hatred, and the gods swear their oaths by its waters.
- Rivers keep their names longer than most places: newcomers usually adopt the existing water name instead of replacing it, and the Rhine is a Celtic name in a Germanic country.
The River Name Generator produces names for rivers, streams and waterways in fantasy maps, novels and tabletop campaigns, each with a short note on its banks and a story hook. Our fantasy town name generator only has a "river town" setting, so nothing on the site named the water itself until this one.
Below are real river names to borrow patterns from: the world's longest rivers, five that share a single ancient root, names that came from somewhere else, and the mythic rivers of the dead.

How This Generator Shapes a River Name
Real river names are short, old and rarely contain the word "river". The generator follows that. Its default batch of five holds two old-root names, two descriptive compounds such as Silverrun, and one name taken from the land the river crosses. No two names in a batch end in the same pair of letters, and "River" is never part of the name, so you decide whether the map says "the Aldwen" or "Aldwen River".
Pick Underworld / Mythic River and it builds names that carry an in-world meaning, such as hatred, forgetting or wailing, from invented roots. It deliberately avoids Styx, Lethe and the other real ones, so your dead do not cross a river everyone already knows.
Each result also comes with a size and character note, what lies on the banks, and one story hook such as a toll bridge, a drowned town or a rumour about the source.
- Keep great rivers to one or two syllables
- Let a town borrow the river's name, as Cambridge did from the Granta
- Give small streams plain descriptive names and large rivers old ones
- Write "Blue Water River", which repeats itself
- Reuse a river from a published book or film
- Give every river on the map the same suffix

Common Questions
What are some river names?
The tables above list 38, from the Nile and Amazon to the Liffey and the Styx. For a fantasy map, the useful pattern is the short, old-sounding name: Danube, Don, Rhine and Lena are all one or two syllables and none of them says "river".
How do I name a fantasy river?
Give it a short root and let the places around it borrow the name. The Granta became the Cam when its town became Cambridge, and the Liffey took its name from its plain. Large rivers also keep their names longer than small streams, so a great river can carry an older, stranger name than the brooks that feed it.
What are cool names for a river?
Dark ones are easiest to build from meaning. Greek tradition has a river of fire (Phlegethon), one of wailing (Cocytus) and one of forgetting (Lethe). Set the generator to Underworld / Mythic River with an edgy tone to get new names built the same way.
