Sci-Fi Military Meets Roguelike Absurdity
RoR2's naming sweet spot sits between two extremes. On one side, you've got the military sci-fi setup — the UES Contact Light, crew manifests, operational callsigns. Every roguelike player has that one run. The run where the items aligned, the RNG blessed you, and you became an unstoppable force for 45 minutes before a Magma Worm ended everything. Run names immortalise those moments.
Good run names tell a story in a few words:
- Item-based: "The Ukulele God," "57 Syringes," "Infinite Teddy Bears" — named for the item that defined the run.
- Achievement-based: "The Monsoon Crawl," "Eclipse 8 Clear," "First Loop" — named for what you accomplished.
- Disaster-based: "Run Zero," "The Worm Incident," "Two Minutes Flat" — named for how it ended.
- Military operation style: "Operation Petrichor," "Contact Light Recovery," "Protocol Omega" — for the serious player.
For co-op groups, shared run names create inside jokes that last. "Remember the Syringe Run?" becomes shorthand for an entire evening of chaos.
The Void and Corruption
RoR2's Void content adds a darker layer to the naming pool. The Void Fiend is literally a survivor being consumed by alien corruption, constantly shifting between forms. Void-adjacent names feel unstable — like they're glitching.
Glitch. Rift. Corrupt. Unstable. Phase. These names work for anyone who's touched the Void or spent too long on Petrichor V. They're the names of survivors who might not be entirely human anymore.
Co-op Naming for Your Squad
RoR2 is best in co-op, and coordinated naming makes it better. A squad of four with themed callsigns — Deadshot (Railgunner), Irongrip (Loader), Frostbyte (Artificer), Beacon (Captain) — sounds like an actual strike team over voice comms.
For maximum immersion, use callsigns in voice chat. "Deadshot, focus the Magma Worm" hits harder than "Player 2, shoot that thing." And when someone inevitably dies, "We lost Beacon" is properly dramatic.
